Quick Third of a Season Review

We are officially done with 1/3 of the MLB season and the Mets sit in 4th place in the NL East with a 25-29 record. If they were to keep up this pace for the rest of the season that would equate to a 75-87 record which to be honest would not be terrible. I am not saying that I am happy with it, but all things considered (ie- what a mess the on-field and off-field organization is), we could be staring at a 95-100 loss season. So what has gone right? What has gone wrong? Let's give out some grades knowing that players will be based on what we expected to see from them at the beginning of the year.

A - "Doing all we could have asked for and more"
--Jose Reyes: Might be one of the games best players at the current time. On pace for 228 hits, 51 doubles, 24 triples, 57 stolen bases and a .335 batting average.
--Jason Isringhausen: The best story to date. We all assumed he would make the team for sentimental reasons, but instead has been a steadying force in the bullpen (even with the recent hiccups)
--Justin Turner: The afterthought in the 2b battle is hitting .323 with 21 RBI in 29 games. He has been amazing.
--Francisco Rodriguez: His recent struggles notwithstanding, K-Rod has been the lockdown closer we all hoped for - 1.73 ERA, 15/16 in save opps.
--Dillon Gee: He is bound to come back to earth, but so far so amazing. 5-0 and 3.37 ERA in his starts.

B - "Definitely keeping up his end of the bargain"
--Ike Davis: He would have been higher (7 HR, 25 RBI in 36 games), but an injury will keep him out until the All-Star break.
--Carlos Beltran: I am normally a hater, but I'm not sure anyone saw this coming. 8 HR, 28 RBI is nice, but 52 games played is amazing
--Daniel Murphy: I figured he would be a part-time player, but he has had a nice bounce back year at the plate (.284, 10 doubles, 17RBI) and has played 4 positions on defense.

C - "Ho-hum"
--Josh Thole: He is only hitting .227 on the year, but I don't think anyone expected much more out of him.
--Willie Harris: He started off well, but has hit .119 since April 19. Not terrible considering he is a lifetime .238 hitter.
--Jonathan Niese: I was hoping for a little more, but 4-5 with a 3.92 ERA is not the worst considering the heightened level of pressure he has on him. Oh, and it would be great if he could bring down his 1.43 WHIP.
--Chris Capuano: Considering he missed all of 2008 and 2009 with an arm injury, a 3-5 record with 4.94 ERA is not the worst case scenario.
--Bullpen outside of K-Rod, Izzy: Pedro Beato has been amazing. Taylor Buchholz has been steady. Igarashi, Byrdak and Parnell have been so-so.

D - "Better pick it up"
--Angel Pagan: Ok, I expected a lot more, but he was injured for a month, so his stats might be deceiving
--David Wright: You just know I can't give him an F. Currently injured, Wright is hitting .226 with 18 RBI in 39 games. Not as bad as Bay, but he better watch out.
--Mike Pelfrey: My friend Buns knows that he is a not a #1 starter but has been given that role by default. I agree, but a 5.00 ERA in the NL is unacceptable.
--RA Dickey: I have to do it. After last year I think we all expected 15 wins and a sub 3 ERA. This year he is on pace for 18 losses and a 4.39 ERA

F - "Epic Fail"
--Jason Bay: 10 RBi in 33 games with a .242 average. Getting paid $18million/yr

Incomplete, but looking good
--Ronny Paulino: .327 in limited action post steroid suspension
--Ruben Tejada: Got the defense down. Cautiously optimistic about the offense (.293 in 12 games)
--Francisco Martinez: Didn't look overmatched during his 9 game call-up
--Chris Young: His injury was definitely a disappointment given his 1.88 ERA and 0.96WHIP through 4 games started.

Incomplete, but not so great
--Jason Pridie: I felt like he filled in admirably for Pagan, but the stats simply don't show it
--Pat Misch: I was intrigued by the lefty after his brief stint in 2010, but this year he looks overmatched
